Shawn Marion to get celebration, Chicago style

Move over Dirk Nowitzki and J.J. Barea with your hometown parades and celebrations. Shawn Marion's got his own party going on.

The city of North Chicago will host a July 11 celebratory rally for its own hometown hero, according to today's Lake County Sun-News.

North Chicago mayor Leon Rockingham, Jr., said the open-to-the public event will feature a show by local drill teams, drumlines, performers and special guests. Marion will receive a “Key to the City” from Rockingham and other awards and accolades from county and state representatives, a city spokesman told the paper.

He will also receive recognition for his “giving back to the community” efforts as he kicks off the sixth annual Shawn Marion Basketball Camp that he offers free of charge to North Chicago youth.

North Chicago is an outer suburb/exurb of the Chicago metropolitan area and is an incorporated city in Lake County. The rally will be held at the North Chicago Community High School Gym.

Marion completed his second season with the Mavs. The starting small forward played a key role in the playoffs as Dallas' main defender against Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant and LeBron James. He averaged 11.9 points and 6.3 rebounds during the championship run.
