According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale (twitter), free agent first baseman Prince Fielder is meeting with the Rangers today at a Dallas-area hotel. Nightengale, who was on ESPN Dallas 103.3 FM on Friday, believes it’s possible the Rangers could sign both Fielder and Yu Darvish, crediting the club’s huge television contract that starts in 2015.
Fielder obviously makes sense for the Rangers, given their lack of production at first base in recent years and the fact that he’s a power, left-handed bat. The question is what kind of contract he would command. ESPN.com’s Buster Olney tweeted that one executive believes the Rangers, Nationals and Cubs would possibly get a contract structure of six years with an opt-out after three years at $22 to $24 million a year. That would clearly make it easier for the Rangers to afford both Fielder and Darvish.
