Lancaster, California, junior featherweight Chris Avalos (25-3, 19 KOs), 25, who suffered a fifth-round knockout loss in his last fight when he traveled to Northern Ireland to challenge Carl Frampton for his 122-pound world title on Feb. 28, will replace injured Jessie Magdaleno in the "Solo Boxeo Tecate" (UniMas, 11 p.m. ET) main event on Saturday at the Dr. Pepper Arena in Frisco, Texas, Top Rank announced Monday.
Avalos will face the Philippines' Rey Perez (20-6, 5 KOs), 24, in the scheduled eight-round bout after Magdaleno dropped out on Thursday when he injured his right hand sparring. Magdaleno was supposed to fight Perez.
"No excuses. I just got caught. I trained hard for that title fight and would like to get a rematch. That's my goal," Avalos said of the fight with Frampton. "But Rey Perez is next. I've seen video of a couple of his fights so I know what he is all about. Even though I wasn't scheduled to fight I had been training for quite awhile when my manager Mike Criscio got the call for our team to head to Texas."
