Gary Kubiak outlines how play calling will go for Broncos

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. – Denver Broncos coach Gary Kubiak has said he plans on taking an active role in the team’s game-day play calling.

And in Friday night’s preseason opener in Seattle, the Broncos will show their game-day alignment for the coaching staff for the first time.

Kubiak, like all head coaches, will be on the sideline, as will quarterbacks coach Greg Knapp. It will be Knapp whose voice quarterback Peyton Manning hears in the communication earpiece in his helmet during the season, but much of the time, unless something in the game dictates otherwise, it will be Kubiak who makes the call and Knapp who delivers the call to Manning. Manning can then make any adjustments at the line of scrimmage that have been prepared during the week.

Offensive coordinator Rick Dennison will also be in the coaches’ box. Backup quarterback Brock Osweiler is expected to start Friday, with Manning getting the night off.

“We’ve all been together before, all known each other, worked with each other for a long time. We like how it works," Kubiak said. “It’ll go smoothly and we’ll get things as quickly as we need to and when we go no-huddle, the plan’s in place for that, too."

Defensively, coordinator Wade Phillips will be on the sideline during games.
