Editors encourage HBCU student writers in their craft

The MEAC/SWAC Challenge presented by Disney is more than just a game and a series of ancillary events. ESPN Events editors have worked with journalism students from both schools participating in the Sept. 6 game who have a passion for their schools and their football programs. South Carolina State University students Robert S. Blue II and Alexis Roberts partnered on a profile on Bulldogs linebacker Reggie Owens, who is one of the program’s hallmark players, “representing South Carolina State with courage, tenacity and exhilaration on and off the field.” Chelsea Miller, a senior broadcast major at University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, opines about Golden Lions head coach Monte Coleman, who plays the role of father figure and coach. “We want to win football games, but the No. 1 objective is to graduate these young men,” Coleman said in the piece.
