Here's one for the record books.

Bishop's School (San Diego) and Crawford (San Diego) went 25 rounds of penalty kicks -- 50 kicks in all -- in a CIF-San Diego Division IV boys' soccer playoff match that started Tuesday and finished Wednesday.

"Never in more than 30 years of coaching have I seen anything like this," Bishop's coach Malcolm Tovey told the San Diego Union-Tribune.

The playoff match started Tuesday and regulation ended in a 2-2 tie. The teams then played 15 minutes of sudden death overtime without a goal, leading to the shootout. Both teams were tied following the standard five rounds of penalties. The sudden death shootout ensued and after 16 additional kicks each -- 21 full rounds -- the match was halted due to darkness.

The coaches agreed to replay the contest Wednesday, however, the CIF-San Diego Section ruled that the contest needed to continue from the point it was halted. The teams started Wednesday with a new set of five penalty kick rounds. Matt Harris converted in Bishop's fourth kick of the day, putting the team ahead 3-1 on the day and 21-19 overall. Crawford missed on its fourth attempt, ending the contest.

There is no documented national record for most shootout kicks attempted by the National Federation of High Schools or the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Research by ESPNHS revealed a girls' soccer match in 2010 that went 16 rounds -- 32 kicks total -- but nothing coming close to the Bishop's-Crawford marathon.
