Austin Shanks from Brewster Academy (Wolfeboro, N.H.) confirmed to ESPNHS that he has given his verbal commitment to play men's lacrosse for Michigan.

The attacker was the No. 40 junior on the ESPNHS Top 50 Juniors list and was one of the top players at the Prep School Lacrosse Invitational.

ESPNHS posted this about Shanks after the event, "Shanks scored three goals in his first game of the day. Fast, agile and always around the net, one coach called Shanks a special player."

ESPNHS: What other schools did you consider?

Austin Shanks: “Penn State, Hofstra, Stony Brook and Bryant.”

ESPNHS: What made Michigan such an attractive choice?

AS: “Everything about Michigan was attractive, going over pros and cons of schools it was very hard to pick out a con of Michigan. It had everything I liked most about other schools all in one, the indoor stadium they are building just shows that Michigan lacrosse is going to be very serious.”

ESPNHS: What surprised you about the recruiting process?

AS: “It was surprising how quickly a school could get in contact with my coach from high school or club team and start the process.”

ESPNHS: What was the most important question you asked college coaches during the process?

AS: “One of the most important questions I asked a college coach was if they had any intentions of leaving within the next 4-6 years. It’s important to get a feel for the coach’s when you meet with them. If they don’t have any intentions of being at the school anymore in two years when you get there then that’s a big factor.”

ESPNHS: What one piece of advice would you give to other players who are just starting on the recruiting process?

AS: “Just play lacrosse, don’t be scarred weather or not your going to get a look at a certain tournament or not. Go play as hard as you can for the love of the game and schools will find you.”

ESPNHS: Is there anything about the recruiting process that you think could change that would have made it easier or less stressful for you?

AS: “It would be much easier if college coaches could make phone calls to players earlier in the process.”
