The position on the minds of everyone during last week's draft is in an interesting spot for the Texans right now.
For the first time in franchise history, the Texans are entering a season legitimately without a set starting quarterback, or at least without one presumably tied to the team's future as the long-term starting quarterback.
Texans owner Bob McNair doesn't see it as that big of a deal.
"I think people are always concerned about that position because it’s such a difficult position," McNair said before the Texans' annual charity golf tournament. "[Tom Savage has] got the attributes that could allow him as he develops to become a good NFL quarterback. That’s what we were looking at. He’s big, he’s strong and he really only played about two years in college. He’s got a lot to learn but he’s a guy that Bill [O'Brien] and Rick [Smith] liked early on."
After the 2013 season, McNair was clear that he doesn't see this as a rebuilding process that the new coach would have to undergo. So does he still feel that way given the uncertainty at quarterback?
"Well there are 11 positions on offense and defense; very few teams have all of them filled to their satisfaction," McNair said. "I don’t know if we’ve ever been in that position. I think we’re a pretty solid team and we’ve got our core players who are still around who are outstanding. That’s why I said I just thought we need to fill in some holes, which we have done, but you aren’t going out and completely tearing the team up and rebuilding it from scratch. That’s not the case at all."
McNair was most pleased with improvements the Texans made that would aid their running game and defense. The South Carolina alumnus was delighted to add former South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney to his roster.
"I was really pleased," McNair said. "We’re going to be a solid team. We still have a lot of work to do and these guys coming in are still rookies. We did a lot to strengthen our offensive line. Running the ball is important to us. I think we’re in much, much better shape there. Our defense is going to be outstanding. You put those things together and you’re going to be a very competitive ballclub."
