Player's take on Texans' 'multiple' defense

On Wednesday, John McClain of the Houston Chronicle delved into Romeo Crennel's philosophy on what they keep talking about as being a "multiple" defense.

Today, second-year safety D.J. Swearinger spoke about that, and so far he loves the change in defense.

"It's a lot of adjustments, but it's all adjustments for the better," Swearinger said. "We like it. I like it a whole lot better than last year because it gives us flexibility. We'll be able to confuse a lot of the quarterbacks, switching up calls and stuff like that. I like it. Just ready to keep going with it."

Swearinger was a second-round draft pick last season. He spent the first part of the fall learning and took over Danieal Manning's starting spot after Manning suffered a season-ending injury.

"Him and Ed [Reed], both those guys combined taught me a whole lot," Swearinger said. "I guess you can go back to him saying as a leader they taught me a lot. Just handle myself as a pro, putting my defense in the right position to help me make plays."

Swearinger's been playing next to safety Kendrick Lewis and the two have worked on their communication as they both decipher Crennel's defense.

"There's great quarterbacks in this league. We've got to switch up calls and do different things, to play with the quarterbacks," Swearinger said. "It hasn't been tough. We got a lot of smart guys in the secondary, in this defense. As a pro it's your job to know, to adjust to different calls. It's our job to learn, stay in the playbook."
