Colts still need to add pieces on defense

INDIANAPOLIS -- Have you been able to keep up with all the players the Indianapolis Colts signed since last weekend?

Offensive lineman Todd Herremans. Running back Frank Gore. Linebacker Trent Cole. Receiver Andre Johnson. Defensive lineman Kendall Langford. Re-signing safeties Mike Adams and Colt Anderson, and offensive lineman Joe Reitz.

Don’t worry, though, the Colts aren’t done tinkering with their roster. They still have some needs that must be addressed. The process has just started for them.

The Colts have to find another starting safety to go with Adams, and a big body in the middle of the defensive line. They finished 11th in the league in yards a game allowed at 342.7 last season.

Colts punter Pat McAfee knows who he wants in the middle of their defensive line.

Defensive tackle Vince Wilfork, 32, didn’t have his option picked up by the New England Patriots last week. He takes up a lot of space in the middle of the defensive line, and the Colts need all the help they can get when it comes to stopping the run. The Colts obviously aren’t worried about the age of their players, because Herremans, Gore, Cole, Johnson, and Adams are all in their 30’s. Indianapolis is going all-in to win the Super Bowl next season. Wilfork reportedly is interested in four teams, including returning to the Patriots.

During a conference call Wednesday, Johnson was asked about recruiting other former University of Miami players. Wilfork, like Johnson and Gore, played for the Hurricanes. Coaches Chuck Pagano and Rob Chudzinski coached at the University of Miami.

"I don’t know," Johnson said laughing. "We’ll see what happens."

The draft is next month, so don't panic if things slow down some in free agency front.

Here’s a look at some of the remaining free agents at defensive tackle and safety. Each player was given at least a 'C' grade by ESPN’s Bill Polian
