Mailbag, Part I: Is CB more of a draft priority given Sean Smith's legal issues?

Here’s is this week’s draft edition of the Kansas City Chiefs mailbag. For the non-draft edition, please check back on Sunday. To ask a question for a future edition, send it to me via Twitter (@adamteicher) and tag it #ChiefsMail.

@adamteicher: Cornerback should have been high on the Chiefs' draft priority list even before Sean Smith pleaded guilty to DUI and became subject to NFL suspension for a violation of the substance-abuse policy. Smith is in the last year of his contract and he's the only established cornerback they have, though Jamell Fleming and Phillip Gaines showed promise last season. It's time for the Chiefs to invest a high pick into a cornerback. Smith's possible suspension doesn't help matters, but the Chiefs shouldn't pick someone just to cover for Smith's loss for what might be two games.

@adamteicher: Trades are impossible to predict this far ahead of time, but I think a trade down almost always makes sense if a team can get additional picks. The draft is a percentages game that's usually won by the team with the most picks. I like the idea of moving back a few spots, but not a lot of them.

@adamteicher: The Chiefs will eventually need to replace Derrick Johnson, but it doesn't have to be this year. As for Bud Dupree, from Kentucky, he's a good player but probably best as an outside linebacker.

@adamteicher: Cameron Erving, the center from Florida State, could go as early as the middle of the first round. The Chiefs are picking 18th and the Packers 30th, so the Chiefs would taking a considerable move back in the first round. I might want more than Green Bay's third-rounder for that kind of move.

@adamteicher: Danny Shelton is the nose tackle from the University of Washington. He looks like a solid run player, but might come out of the game on passing downs. If so, opponents would be able to scheme him out of the lineup. I think the 18th pick in the draft should be a three-down player, good enough to stay in the game and help his team no matter the situation. Plus, the Chiefs have Dontari Poe.

@adamteicher: I'll be unveiling my pick for the Chiefs in the NFL Nation mock on ESPN the week of the draft.
