KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A few quick thoughts on the Kansas City Chiefs' third-round draft pick.
The pick: Steven Nelson, CB, Oregon State
My take: Nelson, like first-round draft pick Marcus Peters, is a physical cornerback from the Pac-12. He’ll get the opportunity to play in the Chiefs’ sub defensive packages and if he does as a rookie, he’ll be a solid pick late in the third round.
Numbers at cornerback: The Chiefs entered the draft with a shortage of cornerbacks but that’s no longer a problem after they drafted Peters and Nelson. Together with Sean Smith, Jamell Fleming and Phillip Gaines, the Chiefs have five bodies to throw into the playing mix. Considering six different players started at least one game for the Chiefs at cornerback last year, they may have to add yet another player at corner.
Compensation for losing Branden Albert: Nelson joined the Chiefs with the compensatory pick the Chiefs acquired for losing tackle Branden Albert in free agency last year to the Miami Dolphins.
