KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Here is this week's 53-player roster projection for the Kansas City Chiefs:
Wide receiver (6): Jeremy Maclin, Albert Wilson, Jason Avant, De'Anthony Thomas, Chris Conley, Frankie Hammond Jr. Released or injured list: Da'Ron Brown, Kenny Cook, Junior Hemingway, Donatella Luckett, Jeret Smith, L'Damian Washington, Fred Williams. Williams has had a good summer but probably not good enough to make the roster unless an injury forces the need. Hammond offers the Chiefs some depth as a kickoff and punt returner.
Tight end (2): Travis Kelce, James O'Shaughnessy. Released or injured list: Demetrius Harris, Richard Gordon, Ryan Taylor, Adam Schiltz. The Chiefs would prefer to keep three tight ends but none of these other candidates are worth the roster spot, except Harris. But he hasn't practiced since breaking his foot last November and having two surgeries. If the Chiefs add a third tight end and it's not Harris, I suspect they will look to someone now on another roster who will be released.
Offensive line: (9): Eric Fisher, Ben Grubbs, Mitch Morse, Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, Paul Fanaika, Jeff Allen, Donald Stephenson, Eric Kush, Zach Fulton. Released: Anthony Dima, Garrett Frye, Daniel Munyer, Jarrod Pughsley, Marcus Reed, Tavon Rooks, Derek Sherrod, Charles Tuaau. The injuries to Fisher and Allen complicate matters but it doesn't look like either player will be out for an extended period, so I'll have the Chiefs going with the same nine as last week.
Defensive line (6): Allen Bailey, Jaye Howard, Mike DeVito, Mike Catapano, Nick Williams, David Irving. Released or injured list: Dontari Poe, Hebron Fangupo, Vaughn Martin, Rakeem Nunez-Roches. I'm going with Poe on the injured list even though coach Andy Reid on Monday opened up the possibility he could be ready for the start of the season.
Linebacker (9): Justin Houston, Tamba Hali, Derrick Johnson, Josh Mauga, Dee Ford, Dezman Moses, Josh Martin, Ramik Wilson, Frank Zombo. Released or injured list: D.J. Alexander, Ja'Gared Davis, James-Michael Johnson, Justin March. The Chiefs have some depth at these position, so they'll go heavy here.
Defensive back (11): Ron Parker, Husain Abdullah, Marcus Peters, Phillip Gaines, Eric Berry, Tyvon Branch, Kelcie McCray, Daniel Sorensen, Jamell Fleming, Steven Nelson, Marcus Cooper. Suspended: Sean Smith. Released: Sanders Commings, Aaron Hester, Deji Olatoye, Kenneth Perry, Kevin Short. I've added Cooper since last week, so the Chiefs will have five cornerbacks at least until Smith returns from suspension. At that point, Cooper's roster spot is in peril.
