KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- If running back Jamaal Charles needs a break after carrying the workload for the Kansas City Chiefs for almost a full season, he isn’t showing it. Charles has been even more productive over the last five games than he was for the first 10.

Charles will probably take a seat for Sunday’s final regular season game against the Chargers in San Diego. The Chiefs can’t help their playoff standing by winning or hurt it by losing. They are locked into the AFC’s fifth seed.

Though the Chiefs, losers of four of their last six games, might be able to benefit from playing at least some of their key players against the Chargers, it’s best to sit Charles. He is one week removed from a five-touchdown game against the Raiders in Oakland and looks fresh physically, the burden of carrying the Chiefs offensively all season has to be a grind.

That wasn’t on Charles’ mind in the frustrated moments following Sunday’s 23-7 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

“I’m not even worried about sitting out right now,’’ he said.

Coach Andy Reid was mad at himself for not getting more from Charles against the Colts. Charles had only 13 carries and caught five passes but had just six touches in the second half.

“The game kind of got away in that fourth quarter,’’ said Reid, who calls the offensive plays. “We were still in it in the second half and we were put in a position where we had to throw the ball a little bit. We had a couple of routes that were set up for him that they covered him, they rolled the coverage that way. The coverage didn’t present itself where we could use him.

“You want to give him . . . he’s a very good football player. You want to make sure you give him enough touches. What the number is, I don’t know. I know that you give it to him a few more times in the second half.''
