Chiefs Camp Report: Day 11

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. -- A daily review of the hot topics coming out of Kansas City Chiefs training camp at Missouri Western State University:

  • Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry returned to practice after missing a couple of days with what the Chiefs are calling a sore heel. Berry wasn’t limited in any way and did everything he otherwise would have done in practice. “It was a little irritated,’’ said Berry, who indicated he would play in Thursday night’s preseason opener against the Cincinnati Bengals at Arrowhead Stadium. “I just couldn’t really plant like I wanted to. We got the information back so quick and we attacked it so fast, it did a great job of helping me get back on the field. Now it’s just being more proactive in keeping it that way.’’ The injury was the second for Berry at camp. He earlier dislocated the small finger on his right hand. “I’m just getting [injuries] out of the way,’’ he said.

    • Slowly but surely the Chiefs continue to work Dee Ford, their first-round draft pick, into their lineup on obvious passing downs. Ford put a pass-rush move on backup offensive tackle J’Marcus Webb that left Webb reeling. The Chiefs are eager to see how Ford fares against the Bengals. “You’ve got to always perfect your craft,’’ Ford said. “It is never going to be different. Whether you false-step or [use] quick hands, you can continue to critique yourself. I’m never going to be satisfied with my pass-rush.”

      • The veteran taught rookie a good lesson when tight end Anthony Fasano ripped the ball away from safety Daniel Sorensen in the end zone. Sorensen had made a good play on the ball and appeared to have the interception before Fasano pulled the ball away. Fasano then punctuated the play by spiking the ball at Sorensen’s feet. “Fasano is great,’’ offensive coordinator Doug Pederson said. “He’s an excitable guy and loves to compete and anytime he can make a play . . . you love to see that from the guys.’’

        • Strong storms and heavy rain forced the Chiefs indoors for practice for the first time at camp. But the change didn’t force the Chiefs to alter their practice plan, which included a lengthy period of work inside the 20-yard line.

          • The Chiefs will practice on Monday at 8:15 a.m. Central time. That will be their final training camp practice before the Cincinnati game. The Chiefs won’t practice in St. Joseph again until Aug. 9.
