Chiefs mailbag: Will Charles' role change?

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Here is this week's edition of the Kansas City Chiefs mailbag. To ask a question for a future edition, send it to me via Twitter (@adamteicher) and tag it #ChiefsMail.

@adamteicher: I'm not going to suggest that Jamaal Charles won't continue to be a big part of the Chiefs' plans or that he won't have games in which he gets the ball a lot. The Chiefs didn't give him a new contract so they could start phasing him out. But I think the days are over when they rely on him so heavily week in and week out. I could see Knile Davis most weeks keeping some sort of significant role.

@adamteicher: I would certainly trade Davis to the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for Cordarrelle Patterson. I would probably trade Jamaal Charles to the Vikings in return for Patterson. I believe Andy Reid and his staff would have good use for a big, fast receiver like Patterson. But the Vikings need him, too. They need him even more now that a rookie, Teddy Bridgewater, will make his first start at quarterback this week. So while it's fun to think about, this trade would never happen. The Vikings wouldn't do it.

@adamteicher: Donald Stephenson, the starting right offensive tackle, hasn't played or practiced with the Chiefs since the start of the regular season because of his four-game NFL suspension for violation of the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances. He's eligible to return to the Chiefs on Tuesday, a day after the game against the New England Patriots. Because he's been out so long, it makes no sense for the Chiefs to rush him back for the subsequent game against the San Francisco 49ers. The Chiefs are better off going with what they have against the 49ers with Stephenson as a backup, then getting him ready during the bye and another week of practice for the Oct. 19 game against the Chargers in San Diego.

@adamteicher: There's a chance the Chiefs release Dwayne Bowe after this season. But he's still their best wide receiver and until they're more aggressive about changing that fact, he still has value to the Chiefs. They should keep him until they have a proven replacement.

@adamteicher: Not only do I think the Chiefs have a chance. I think they'll win.
