Raiders claim defensive end Lavar Edwards, announce practice squad

The Oakland Raiders continued to tool their roster by making another waiver claim and filling their 10-man practice squad Monday.

Oakland claimed defensive end Lavar Edwards from Dallas. Cornerback Chimdi Chekwa was put on the injured reserve to make room for Edwards. He was a fifth-round pick by Tennessee two years ago and traded to the Cowboys last year. He has one NFL start. The Raiders now have six defensive ends on the roster. Oakland claimed safety Keenan Lambert form Seattle on Sunday.

Oakland also filled its practice squad. This is the group: running back George Atkinson III, guard Mitch Bell, cornerback SaQwan Edwards, quarterback Garrett Gilbert, defensive end Shelby Harris, tackle Dan Kistler, safety Tevin McDonald, defensive tackle Leon Orr, linebacker Josh Shirley and defensive end Max Valles.

The one surprise is running back Michael Dyer did not make the practice squad. Atkinson was chosen over him because of his work on special teams. Dyer received praise from the coaching staff often in training camp.

In other Raiders' notes:

  • Safety Craig Dahl signed with the Giants. He visited the Raiders on Sunday, but the team didn't sign him at the time.

  • The contract for linebacker Lorenzo Alexander was a one-year, $870,000 with no bonuses.
