Arizona Cardinals coach Bruce Arians, whose team will face the Oakland Raiders this Sunday, spoke to reporters Wednesday morning. A few nuggets:
The early days of Oakland quarterback Derek Carr’s NFL career have been highlighted by his unique poise for a rookie. Arians said “there isn’t any doubt” Carr has uncommon poise for such a young quarterback.
Arians, a quarterback specialist, said he thinks Carr is so comfortable so early because of his family background. His brother David was the No. 1 overall draft pick of the Houston Texans in 2002. Derek was 11 at the time and spent a lot of time in the locker room.
“He grew up around it,” said Arians, who pointed out the Manning brothers and Andrew Luck as similar quarterbacks who eased into the NFL. Those players are sons of former NFL quarterbacks.
In other topics:
Arians said he is pleased with left tackle Jared Veldheer, who the Cardinals signed from the Raiders in free agency. Arians said Veldheer struggled a bit Sunday against the Redskins’ Brian Orakpo. However, Arians said Veldheer has otherwise been a steady presence.
Arians said Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer continues to progress. The former Raiders quarterback played against Washington after missing three games with a shoulder issue. Arians said “so far, so good” this week for Palmer. He will play, the only question is whether he will be 100 percent.
