COSTA MESA, Calif. -- The Los Angeles Chargers made 38 moves to trim their roster to the NFL-mandated 53 players. Here’s a closer look:

Most significant move: Wide receiver Mike Williams has been dealing with a lower back disc herniation since suffering the injury during rookie minicamp in May and did not participate in training camp. However, according to Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn, Williams has been making steady progress in his rehab and the team remained hopeful that the Clemson product would be ready for the regular season. That appears to be the case now, as Williams begins the regular season on the active roster.

Although backup quarterback Kellen Clemens is not on the roster, the Chargers intend to re-sign the University of Oregon product, according to a team source.

Boston beats out Lowery: Incumbent safety Dwight Lowery was in a tight competition with Tre Boston for the starting free safety job, and the Chargers chose youth over experience. Lowery, 31, was due $2 million in base salary if he was on the Week 1 roster. The San Jose State product led the Chargers with 961 defensive snaps in 2016. Instead, the Bolts will go with Boston, 25, who signed with the team during the offseason in free agency after being released by the Carolina Panthers. The Chargers also have solid depth behind in Boston in Adrian Phillips, Dexter McCoil and Desmond King, who all played well during training camp.

Chargers move on from Lambo: Incumbent kicker Josh Lambo finished the preseason 2-for-2 on field goals, including a long of 53 yards, made all four of his extra points, and six of his seven kickoffs went for touchbacks. But even with those solid numbers, the Chargers chose instead to go with undrafted rookie Younghoe Koo, who made a 27-yard field goal and went 3-for-3 on extra points during the preseason. Lambo appeared to have the bigger leg, but one advantage for Koo was his directional kicks. Opposing teams averaged just 21 yards per return on his kickoffs in the preseason. Koo provided good hang time for the kickoff coverage team to get down the field and snuff out a big return.
