Chargers' Travis Benjamin wins AFC special teams player of the week

COSTA MESA, Calif. -- Travis Benjamin was rewarded for the big plays he made in the Los Angeles Chargers' shutout win against the Denver Broncos over the weekend, as the speedster was named AFC special teams player of the week by the NFL on Wednesday.

Benjamin returned a punt 65 yards for a touchdown and had a 42-yard reception for a score. Benjamin also had a return for 20 yards. The University of Miami product has won the award four times, the most by a return specialist since Benjamin entered the league in 2012.

It's the first time the Chargers had a player earn special teams player of the week honors since punter Drew Kaser won the award in the Week 6 win over the Broncos last year.

Benjamin is the third Charger to garner player of the week honors this season. Defensive end Melvin Ingram won the defensive award after racking up three sacks in a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 3.

Running back Melvin Gordon won it on offense in Week 5 after totaling 163 yards from scrimmage and two touchdown receptions in a win over the New York Giants.
