Puig named player of the week

LOS ANGELES – Considering Yasiel Puig did something no Los Angeles Dodgers rookie had done in more than 100 years, it’s not surprising that he was named the National League’s player of the week Monday.

Puig became the first Dodger since 1900 to have 13 hits in his first seven games. Puig, 22, batted .464 with four home runs and 10 RBIs after being recalled from Double-A Chattanooga last Monday. He had multi-hit games in five of the seven games.

Puig also made two spectacular throws from right field to throw out base runners, one of them ending a game.

Puig is the first rookie to win for his debut week since Baltimore’s Manny Machado last August. He’s the first Dodgers rookie to win one since Andre Ethier in July 2006.

Puig batted .516 in spring training.
