GALAXY: Chris Klein takes academy role

Chris Klein played his final game as a pro last weekend in Australia, but the veteran midfielder isn't leaving the Galaxy. The club announced Friday he has been appointed senior director of its Academy program and of special projects.

What does that mean? Here's what the release said:

“Klein will be responsible for overseeing the long-term financial and technical plan for the Academy, while building a strong presence in the local soccer community. Klein will also be in charge of developing and improving the Academy’s training facilities and programs, coaching staff and recruitment program.”

Klein spent a dozen seasons in Major League Soccer with Kansas City, Real Salt Lake and the Galaxy, and his 333 regular-season appearances are fifth on the all-time list.
