Dolphins' 25-and-under team: Olivier Vernon

The Miami Dolphins had plenty of roster turnover this offseason and will rely on young players at key positions.

Here is a preview of a player entering his contract year:

Dolphins' 25-and-under player: Olivier Vernon

Position: Defensive end

Experience: Fourth season

Analysis: Vernon, 24, turned out to be a very good third-round pick for Miami. He never missed a game and has registered 21.5 sacks in three seasons. Vernon is entering a contract year in his fourth season. Expect Vernon to be motivated to have a big year, which in turn would include a big contract extension from the Dolphins or someone else in 2016. Vernon should be one of the major beneficiaries of Miami signing Pro Bowl defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh this offseason. Suh will command a lot of double teams in the middle, which will allow other defensive linemen -- such as Vernon and Cameron Wake -- to get more one-on-one matchups. Vernon burst on the scene in 2013 as a first-time starter and registered 11.5 sacks. But Vernon's total went down to 6.5 sacks in 2014 once teams began to focus on him. He must get back to his 2013 form to help Miami’s defense reach its full potential.
