Former Miami Dolphins second-round pick Jonathan Martin is retiring just days before training camp, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and various media reports. Martin signed with the Carolina Panthers this offseason after playing last season with the San Francisco 49ers.
Interestingly, Martin was scheduled to face the Dolphins in August for the first time since being traded from the Dolphins following the bullying scandal in 2013. The Panthers will play host to Miami on Aug. 22, and the Dolphins will travel to Carolina’s training camp earlier in the week for a pair of joint practices.
Martin’s brief, three-year career will mostly be remembered for his involvement in the scandal. He left the Dolphins after being harassed by former teammate Richie Incognito, which sparked an investigation into Miami’s locker-room culture. Incognito was released and Martin was traded the following offseason.
Incognito plays for the Buffalo Bills after sitting out the 2014 season.
