The Miami Dolphins are in the process of slashing salaries in order to create cap room. In turn, they will use the cap room on free agents to upgrade their roster.
Who are some of these players that Miami could target next month? ESPN.com’s Dolphins page takes a look this week at several players who are good fits.
On Monday, we start with a safety for the reigning AFC North champions.
Potential free-agent target: S George Iloka
2015 team: Cincinnati Bengals
2015 stats: 47 tackles, one interception
Why he’s a fit for the Dolphins: Cincinnati has one of the most talented rosters in the NFL, and four of its top five defensive backs are pending free agents. Iloka, 25, is the youngest of the four free agents and has plenty of upside. I’m also told new Dolphins defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, who was Cincinnati’s secondary coach, really likes Iloka. Miami could use a player familiar with Joseph’s scheme and coaching style and also a starting safety next to Pro Bowler Reshad Jones. Iloka may command a salary in the range of $6 million per season, which the Dolphins should be able to afford once they make key roster cuts and restructures.
