DAVIE, Fla. – Former NFL wide receiver Reggie Wayne was a special guest at Miami Dolphins minicamp on Wednesday. Wayne has a strong connection to Dolphins offensive coordinator Clyde Christenen, who coached the receiver during most of his career with the Indianapolis Colts.
“He’s one of those guys that you just love talking ball with and love being around,” said Dolphins head coach Adam Gase, who met Wayne at the 2012 Pro Bowl. “Any time any of our players can talk to guys of that caliber. ... it’s great for our guys. They learn stuff.”
Wayne, who announced his retirement in January after 14 seasons in the NFL, wasn’t the only former Pro Bowl receiver at Dolphins camp Wednesday. Wes Welker also made another appearance and worked with Miami’s receivers. Gase coached Welker when both were members of the Denver Broncos.
Welker, who played with the St. Louis Rams last season, hasn't decided on retirement or what he wants to do next. But he has been around the camps of the Dolphins and Baltimore Ravens.
“If he wants to come around, he's welcome,” Gase said of Welker. “Whether it goes any further than that, it's a day-by-day thing with Wes. He knows that I'll have his back in whatever he wants to do.”
