Is Dallas Thomas a 2014 sleeper?

One of the pleasant surprises of the Miami Dolphins' offseason has been second-year guard Dallas Thomas. He played just four snaps during a virtually non-existent rookie season. But Thomas has proved to be one of the most improve players on Miami’s roster.

Thomas went on a strict diet and rejoined the Dolphins in the best shape of his career. The early results have earned Thomas first-team reps in Miami.

The spring and summer production also caught the eye of ESPN.com NFL Insider Mike Sando, who wrote an interesting piece Monday highlighting surprise offseason players from around the league. Thomas made Sando's list now that Thomas is the new favorite to start at left guard next to Dolphins Pro Bowl left tackle Branden Albert.

Here is Sando’s explanation:

It’s especially tough for linemen to prove themselves in noncontact practices, but Thomas showed up for camps healthy and in very good condition, allowing his athleticism to show through more than it did during a difficult 2013 rookie season. Thomas could be a favorite to start at guard ahead of rookie third-round pick Billy Turner.

For those who missed it, I did a one-on-one interview with Thomas last week during mandatory minicamp.
