Mike Zimmer will miss Vikings' practice to be with ailing father

MANKATO, Minn. -- Mike Zimmer will be away from the Minnesota Vikings on Tuesday, as he travels to Naples, Florida, to be with his father Bill.

Zimmer told reporters after Monday's practice that offensive coordinator Norv Turner would run Tuesday's practices.

The 84-year-old Bill Zimmer coached his son in football and wrestling in high school, and Mike Zimmer has often credited his father with instilling the toughness in him that he now preaches to his players. Bill Zimmer's health was shaky last season, but had improved to the point where he could hold a 60th anniversary party in June.

The Vikings have the day off on Wednesday before returning to Minnesota State on Thursday and Friday for their final practices before the Pro Football Hall of Fame Game on Sunday.
