Astros by the numbers: Deduno reaches franchise low-water mark

Houston Astros starting pitchers had a 3.50 ERA (eighth in the major leagues) in April. Samuel Deduno lasted 4 2/3 innings and allowed 10 earned runs in Wednesday’s 11-3 loss to the Texas Rangers, bringing the starters’ to a 7.16 ERA in May.

Deduno became the first pitcher this season to allow 10 earned runs in a game (Clay Buchholz, April 12, is the only other pitcher to allow 10 runs, but one was unearned). The last Astros pitcher to surrender 10 earned runs was Wandy Rodriguez on Aug. 14, 2009. Two other pitchers in franchise history have allowed 11 hits and 10 earned runs in less than five innings: Runelvys Hernandez in 2008 and Bob Knepper in 1989.
