With 16 NBA championships to their credit, the Los Angeles Lakers were bound to have a strong showing in Kevin Pelton's list of the 50 greatest NBA teams.

Ten Lakers seasons made the cut, one less than the Boston Celtics for most among all teams. Tops for LA was the 1986-87 squad, which ranked third on the list.

That year's team, led by Magic Johnson, won 65 games during the regular season before defeating the Celtics in six games in the Finals to claim their fourth of five championships that decade.

Other Lakers teams that made the list include three of those other four winning 80s units, four groups from the Kobe Bryant era and the '71-73 teams that each made Finals appearances behind Wilt Chamberlain. The '71-72 squad (ranked 12th) won in the Finals while the '72-73 group (ranked 45th) fell short.
