Louisiana Tech DB receiver half-game suspension

Western Athletic Conference commissioner Karl Benson has suspended Louisiana Tech defensive back Chad Boyd as a result of a foul deemed flagrant by the WAC office following Louisiana Tech’s game at LSU last Saturday.

Consequently, Boyd will miss the first half of Saturday’s game against Fresno State.

The flagrant foul occurred at the 13-minute mark of the third quarter and was not called by officials.

"A flagrant personal foul should have been called by the game officials, and Boyd should have been ejected from the game at that time," Benson said. “By NCAA rules, I am required to review these types of situations and it was determined that the player clearly committed a flagrant foul, and thus will be suspended."

Louisiana Tech coach Derek Dooley, who already will be missing several starters in the game because of injuries, said he did not agree with the league's decision to suspend a player for a penalty that was not called on the field.

“I am disappointed in the decision and have voiced my respectful disagreement on the rule interpretation and penalty enforcement to the commissioner,” said Dooley, who is also the school’s athletic director. “In the end, the decision is out of our control and our focus is entirely on the challenge that awaits us at Fresno State.”
