1.Boise State Broncos coach Chris Petersen visited Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Oregon last week. While in Eugene, Petersen spent 20 minutes chatting on the sideline with a former Duck running back: LeGarrette Blount, who served a lengthy suspension for throwing a postgame punch at Boise State last September. As for the 2010 Ducks, Petersen gushed about sophomore tailback LaMichael James. “He’s perfect for that offense because he’s so quick,” Petersen said.
2.The adjustments at Texas and Florida are going to fascinate well into the fall, mainly because two smart coaches have such different ideas about moving forward from their running quarterbacks. Texas put Garrett Gilbert under center and re-introduced the Longhorns to the play-action pass. Florida has a pocket passer in John Brantley but coach Urban Meyer refuses to abandon the Wildcat formation. Could it mean that Brantley isn’t showing Meyer enough?
3.Texas Tech begins the spring with two senior quarterbacks fighting for a job. It ends with both Steven Sheffield (broken left foot) and Taylor Potts (right hand ligament) recuperating from surgery. Both are expected to be ready in August and in the meantime, sophomore Seth Doege and freshman Jacob Karam get to work with the starters. If head coach Tommy Tuberville doesn’t see that glass as half-full, he better look again.
