Southern Miss and Mississippi State renew rivalry

Southern Miss and Mississippi State have decided to renew their rivalry.

The two schools announced Thursday that they will play a two-game, home-and-home football series beginning in 2014.

Both games will occur on the opening weekend of the 2014 and 2015 seasons. Mississippi will host the first game will be on Aug. 30, 2014, and Southern Miss will host the second contest on Sept. 5, 2015.

It will be the first time the teams have met in football since 1990.

“Talk about a stimulus package for the state, this is it," Southern Miss president Martha Saunders said in a statement. "I believe that a renewal of an in-state rivalry with the Bulldogs is a win-win for everyone and long overdue in a state that loves its football."

Southern Miss leads the overall series, which dates back to 1935, 14-12-1. The victory total included Mississippi State forfeits during the 1975 and 1976 seasons.
