Just hours after three-star offensive lineman Robert Castaneda (Round Rock, Texas/Round Rock) decommitted from Kansas State, he was ready to make his next move official.
Castaneda committed to Texas Tech on Saturday afternoon after attending the Red Raiders’ satellite camp in New Braunfels, Texas. He’s commit No. 14 in Texas Tech’s 2014 class.
“I knew as soon as I decommitted that I was ready to go ahead and commit to the place that I love being at,” Castaneda said. “I called the coaches after the camp as over and told them I was ready to be a Red Raider.”
The 6-foot-5, 310-pound senior-to-be said he’ll likely begin his career as an offensive tackle. He’s Tech’s fourth offensive line commit, joining Deionte’ Noel (Cibolo, Texas/Steele), Mildren Montgomery (Oklahoma City/Douglass) and Justin Murphy (Belton, Texas/Belton).
Castaneda committed to Kansas State on March 7 because it was his first Big 12 offer. Since then, Tech turned up its interest and a flip has been almost inevitable for the past month.
“Tech is really close to home and Kansas State is 12 hours away,” Castaneda said. “That’s a killer. It’s too far. Kansas State really treated me nice and they have a great staff. It’s got nothing to do with their program. It’s just too far. My family can’t handle having to drive out there every Saturday for my games.”
Castaneda said Texas Tech had its entire coaching staff on hand at the New Braunfels camp, and he was excited to give them to big news as he rode home.
“Their coaching staff is amazing,” he said. “It’s just a really fun environment in Lubbock, and the direction their program is going is exciting.”
