Injured RB Tyler Gaffney waived by New England Patriots

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Running back Tyler Gaffney, who sustained an undisclosed injury on the opening weekend of training camp, was waived by the New England Patriots on Wednesday.

Officially, Gaffney was waived with an injury designation. If he is not claimed by another team, he will revert to the Patriots' injured reserve list.

That is how Gaffney landed with the Patriots last year, as he was waived by the Carolina Panthers after sustaining a knee injury. The Panthers intended to place him on their injured reserve list, but the Patriots claimed him.

In March, Bill Belichick said he was looking forward to seeing how Gaffney might be able to help the Patriots.

"We're excited to work with Tyler," he said, pointing out that Gaffney worked hard in his recovery from the knee injury.

Gaffney was vying for a role as one of the team's bigger running backs, where LeGarrette Blount (suspended for Week 1) and Jonas Gray are atop the depth chart. He was viewed as a player on the roster bubble.
