RB Montee Ball among six free agents in for tryouts with the Patriots

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The New England Patriots hosted free-agent running back Montee Ball, formerly of the Denver Broncos, on a workout on Tuesday.

Ball was the most notable of the six free agents the Patriots worked out, a group including tight ends Brandon Bostick, Brian Leonhardt and Konrad Reuland, quarterback Zac Dysert, and running back Darrin Reaves. This is the second time the team had Reuland in for a visit, as they hosted him on Sept. 24, 2014.

The workouts are standard operating procedure for the Patriots, who like to keep their emergency lists updated.

Ball, a second-round draft choice in 2013, was waived by Denver on Sept. 6. Ball spent all offseason and preseason as the team's No. 2 option before sliding to No. 4 behind Ronnie Hillman, C.J. Anderson and Juwan Thompson.

In the preseason, Ball rushed for 68 yards on 32 carries (2.1 yards per carry). Aside from a 12-yard and 8-yard carry -- his two longest of the preseason -- Ball gained just 1.6 yards per carry on his other 30 rushes.

The Patriots have LeGarrette Blount and Dion Lewis atop their running back depth chart, followed by James White and Brandon Bolden. They just released running back Travaris Cadet on Tuesday, thinning their depth at the position to make room for linebacker Jon Bostic.
