Patriots place LB Jonathan Freeny and TE Greg Scruggs on IR, promote two

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The New England Patriots have placed linebacker Jonathan Freeny (shoulder) and tight end Greg Scruggs (knee) on injured reserve and have promoted defensive end Geneo Grissom and defensive tackle Anthony Johnson from the practice squad to take their spots on the roster.

Freeny had missed practice all week and was already ruled out by the team. His injury has created more playing time for rookie Elandon Roberts, who was impressive in his most extended playing time of the season last week in Cleveland.

Meanwhile, Scruggs had just been signed a week ago and was injured in Wednesday's practice.

Grissom, a second-year player out of Oklahoma, should help the Patriots on special teams, specifically on the punt protection unit.

Johnson, who made the initial 53-man roster, showed a knack for generating an interior pass rush in preseason.
