Saints sign top pick Cooks to 4-year deal

The New Orleans Saints signed receiver Brandin Cooks to a four-year contract on Sunday, making him just the third first-round pick in the NFL to sign so far. Terms were not disclosed.

The Saints have now signed five of their six draft picks to contracts already, with fourth-round linebacker Khairi Fortt the only one still unsigned.

Rookies have begun to sign deals much sooner in recent years since the NFL instituted a new rookie wage scale in 2011, with the financial terms of deal essentially slotted into place. Cooks’ deal was expected to be worth around $8.4 million, with a $4.4 million signing bonus and a $1.5 million salary-cap hit.

Cooks, who was drafted 20th overall, joins No. 5 pick Khalil Mack of the Oakland Raiders and No. 14 pick Kyle Fuller of the Chicago Bears as the only first-rounders to sign so far.
