Giants punter Steve Weatherford says he's okay after early morning car crash

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- It's been an eventful couple of days for New York Giants punter Steve Weatherford. He was home in California last week when his wife gave birth to a baby girl, but then he had to fly back to New Jersey on Sunday so he could be at Giants organized team activity practice Monday. That's when things got a bit harrowing.

According to Weatherford's ever-active Instagram account, his flight to Newark was re-routed to Washington, D.C. because of weather, so he rented a car and drove through the rainy night to get home. About 3:30 a.m., his rental car skidded on the rainy New Jersey Turnpike and slammed into a median, setting off the airbags and totaling the car.

Weatherford says in his Instagram post that he walked away uninjured and got a ride home to Hoboken with some New Jersey state troopers. In a text message shortly after 10 am, he wrote that he had a "Couple cuts and burns, busted lip. So blessed. I should be dead."

We'll chat with Weatherford later today, but it sounds like he avoided a pretty terrifying fate.
