EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- New York Giants tight end Daniel Fells, who spent three weeks in the hospital last month and has had eight surgeries to fight off a MRSA staph infection in his right foot, returned to MetLife Stadium on Sunday for the first time since contracting his illness.
Fells, who says he's feeling much better following his ordeal, stood on crutches on the Giants' sideline during pregame warm-ups and chatted both with Giants teammates and some former New England Patriots teammates. He spent much of his time with friend and fellow tight end Larry Donnell, who was inactive for the game due to his neck injury.
Fells is out for the season on injured reserve, and the damage done to his foot by the infection and the surgeries needed to combat it has all but certainly ended his football career at the age of 31. But he appears to be in good spirits and happy to be spending time with teammates again.
