EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- As the preseason opener nears, more and more New York Giants players seem to be popping up on the injury list. It could prevent many of them from receiving much-needed preseason snaps.
Coach Ben McAdoo considered them “day to day.”
Thomas is in the mix to start at defensive tackle next to Damon Harrison. The preseason is important for his chances, especially after he joined the Giants late last summer and was in and out of the lineup last season. Harrison is competing with Jay Bromley and rookie Dalvin Tomlinson for a starting spot.
Herzlich had been playing as the second-team middle linebacker.
The Giants open their preseason on Friday against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Other players dealing with injuries:
WR Sterling Shepard (ankle): He was a limited participant in practice for the second straight day. Shepard continues to move well. He was running and cutting without hesitation. It still looks like the Giants aren’t going to rush him back into live drills or for a preseason game.
WR Tavarres King (ankle): He was limited Monday but was not at practice on Friday. King has said the injury isn’t serious. It has still cost him several days and likely the first preseason game.
CB Mykkele Thompson (quad): He’s trying to make the squad as a cornerback after playing safety upon his arrival. Thompson has missed the past two seasons with injuries and was hoping for a fresh start this year. Whether he can get on the field Wednesday and play against the Steelers will be crucial. Thompson was riding the bike Tuesday during practice.
DE Avery Moss (shoulder): The rookie was having a strong practice until he suffered the injury. He is undergoing further tests.
S Ryan Murphy (unknown): The second-year safety missed his first practice of the summer Tuesday. McAdoo didn’t reveal his injury.
LB J.T. Thomas (knee) and RB Shaun Draughn (ankle): Both remain on the physically unable to perform list. They have not practiced yet this spring. Neither player is guaranteed a roster spot and they are missing valuable time. Thomas missed almost all of last year with a torn ACL.
