EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – By the looks of what unfolded Sunday in a blowout loss to the Los Angeles Rams, the New York Giants need help. It could be coming to some degree with the return of several injured players.
Defensive ends Olivier Vernon (ankle) and Kerry Wynn (knee), linebacker Jonathan Casillas (neck) and offensive lineman Justin Pugh (back) all were limited participants at practice on Wednesday as they began preparations for the San Francisco 49ers. Cornerback Janoris Jenkins was also back on the field after serving a one-week suspension.
Pugh missed blowout loss to the Rams but expects to play on Sunday.
“Yeah, every intention that I have is playing,” he said. “Barring a setback, I’ll be out there on Sunday.”
Vernon has been dealing with a high ankle sprain and hasn’t played since aggravating the injury in a Week 4 loss at Tampa Bay. Casillas, the team’s defensive captain, has missed the past three games. He returned to non-contact practices last week and the plan was for him to be more involved this week. Wynn missed the Rams loss after being injured prior to the bye week.
Vernon likely remains a tossup for this week. But Casillas expressed optimism for a return.
“If I can go [Thursday], which I plan on doing, and I make it out OK I’m playing Sunday,” Casillas said.
The additions of Jenkins, Vernon, Wynn and/or Casillas would be a big boost to a Giants defense that allowed the Rams to score on eight of their first nine possessions on Sunday. The unit is ranked 30th, allowing 391.1 yards per game after finishing 10th last season.
Pugh has been the Giants' best lineman this season. His presence would benefit an offense which has struggled to score points. They are tied for 28th in the NFL, averaging 16.1 points per game.
