Giants could get four key starters back vs. 49ers, even if they're short on LBs

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The New York Giants injury report for Week 10 was filled with some good and bad news.

The Giants are likely to get back several key players, including right tackle Justin Pugh, linebacker Jonathan Casillas and defensive end Olivier Vernon. Pugh wasn’t on Friday’s official injury report, while Casillas and Vernon were both officially listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Cornerback Janoris Jenkins is also back after serving a one-week suspension. The return of Jenkins, Vernon and Casillas would be a significant boost for a defense that allowed 51 points last week in an embarrassing loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

The bad news is that while the Giants get back some players, there are others at the linebacker position heading in the wrong direction. Devon Kennard (quad), Keenan Robinson (quad) and B.J. Goodson (ankle) were ruled out for Sunday.

Kennard and Robinson were injured against the Rams. Goodson will miss his second straight game with a high ankle sprain.

The Giants will throw the recently-signed Kelvin Sheppard (who started for them last season) immediately into the mix, potentially as the starter at middle linebacker. He’ll play alongside Casillas and Curtis Grant, with rookie Calvin Munson (quad) also part of the rotation.

“[Sheppard] he’s going to have an opportunity to play,” coach Ben McAdoo said.

Vernon hasn’t played since aggravating his injury in a Week 4 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Giants' leader in sacks last season with 8.5 was limited in practice throughout the week.

“He did a little bit more this week than he did last week,” McAdoo said. “He’s making some progress.”

Kerry Wynn (knee) has started in Vernon's place at times and has a chance to return after missing last week's game as well.

Casillas has missed the past three games. This week was his first taste of any contact since suffering the injury. He felt good this week in practice and expects to play on Sunday against the 49ers.
