Devin Smith leaves practice after making impressive catch

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. –- Rookie wide receiver Devin Smith drew cheers when he managed to haul in a deflected pass while in the air for an impressive catch on Friday.

But as Smith came down while making the catch over cornerback Marcus Williams, the receiver was bumped from behind in the head/neck area by safety Jaiquawn Jarrett and was slow to get up. Not long after his best play of camp, Smith was taken inside for a further look.

Head coach Todd Bowles did not have an update on the rookie speedster when he met with reporters shortly after the non-pads practice.

“I have to go inside and see what happened,” Bowles said. “I saw him walking gingerly coming off.”

Smith got to work with the first team on Friday alongside starting receivers Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker. Smith was drafted in the second round out of Ohio State to add a speedy deep threat.

Colon nearing return: Right guard Willie Colon (knee) could be coming off the active physically unable to perform list soon. Colon said he has been pushing his workouts and is awaiting the OK to be able to practice.

“I think Willie looked good,” Bowles said. “Coming around, hopefully we can get him pads in the next day or two. That would be the goal.”

Defensive end Kevin Vickerson (knee) and running back Stevan Ridley (knee) also are on the active PUP list.
