FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Leonard Williams, the second-year defensive lineman who led the New York Jets in sacks in 2016, was chosen by his teammates as the team’s most valuable player, an honor Williams said Friday he was grateful for, but didn’t want to make a big deal of, considering the Jets’ 4-11 record.
“When I got the award and had to go to the front to get the award, guys were joking around, trying to make me give a speech and stuff like that,’’ Williams told reporters Friday. “And I’m just like, ‘I can’t be too jolly up there, just because the season hasn’t been too great.’ It feels good to accomplish personal goals, but at the same time, this is a team sport and it takes everybody in this locker room to accomplish a team goal.’’
Williams had seven sacks to lead the team, and his 66 tackles were the most among defensive linemen.
Williams, 22, promised that next year he intends to assume more of a leadership role on the team.
“I’m more comfortable with being able to step up and be more of a leader this upcoming year,’’ he said. “In high school and college it’s a little more natural, but in the NFL it’s a little different, because it’s like, the years that you’re in, is almost the kind of respect that you get. So when I first came in, it’s like, ‘I’m just a rookie.’
“I’m still not super-vocal; I’m not that super-vocal type of guy,’’ he said. “But when things have to be said, I’m definitely going to say something.’’
Injury report: RB Matt Forte (knee), LB Lorenzo Mauldin (ankle), DT Steve McLendon and TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins (both hamstring) are all out for Sunday’s season finale against the Buffalo Bills, per coach Todd Bowles; CB Nick Marshall (hamstring) is doubtful.
WR Robby Anderson (hamstring), CB Juston Burris (knee), WR Brandon Marshall (hip, shoulder), RB Bilal Powell (knee), DT Sheldon Richardson (back), RB Brandon Wilds (hamstring) and DE Muhammad Wilkerson (ankle, knee) are all listed as questionable. According to Bowles, several of the questionable players will be game-day or game-time decisions. Bowles said Wilkerson is automatically on the injured list because he will take fewer practice reps on some days than others and therefore must be listed has having limited participation in practice.
