A league source confirmed to ESPNNewYork.com Thursday that Nets backup point guard C.J. Watson will opt out of the final year of his contract and become an unrestricted free agent.

Watson had a player option for $1.1 million; he signed a two-year deal last offseason.
The source said it’s possible that he returns -- the Nets can only offer him the veteran’s minimum because they are over the salary cap -- but there will obviously be a marketplace for a backup point guard that can make 3-point shots consistently.
Second-year pro Tyshawn Taylor is the only other point guard currently under contract aside from starter Deron Williams.
