NEW YORK -- Brooklyn Nets coach Jason Kidd, who will have his No. 5 jersey retired Thursday night, received praise from the NBA's reigning MVP.

“He’s one of the best point guards to ever play the game, from my perspective,” Miami Heat forward LeBron James said. “His leadership, when he first came into the league, his quickness, his passing ability. ... You just look at his numbers, from 3-point shooting to assists and steals and rebounds. He would rebound the ball and then go to coast-to-coast.

“What he did for this franchise in New Jersey, taking them to two straight NBA Finals and kind of changing the whole culture with a team, everyone playing together, is great. I’m happy for him.

“I was a teammate of his on the 2008 Olympic team in Beijing and he probably took one shot the whole tournament.”
