Prince 'optimistic' about playing this week

Giants cornerback Prince Amukamara hopes to suit up this Thursday against Carolina.

After sitting out Sunday's win over Tampa with a high ankle sprain, Amukamara's status for the Giants' Week 3 matchup against the Panthers is up in the air.

"I'm very optimistic (about playing)," the second-year CB said. "I hope this is the week but, if not, we have another break at the end of this week."

Amukamara participated in Tuesday's practice on a limited basis. The Giants will hold a walk-through on Wednesday before they fly to Charlotte, so his availability may be a game-time decision.

Rookie Jayron Hosley started in place of Amukamara while also handling slot receivers on three-wide sets against Tampa.

Amukamara said he's been splitting reps with Michael Coe and Hosley in practice. Coe was limited on Tuesday with a hamstring injury.

Amukamara still feels pain in his ankle and Coughlin suggested earlier this week he'd have to play with a "minimal" amount of pain. The 2011 first-round pick has been beset by injuries for most of his brief career.

"I've been preparing like I'm going to play this week," Amukamara said. "I've been in meetings and I've been in the lineup so those are all good signs from me."
