          Giants donate $500K to aid Sandy relief

          The New York Giants are donating $500,000 to help those in need of aid due to Hurricane Sandy.

          The team's donation will be divided between the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund and the Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City.

          "The New York metropolitan area sustained extensive and devastating damage to its infrastructure in Hurricane Sandy," Giants owners John Mara and Steve Tisch said in a joint statement. "The Giants want to do everything we can to assist our neighbors, fans and friends. Toward that end, after careful consideration, we have decided to make donations to these two very worthy funds. We are in this for the long haul and will continue to assist relief efforts in our hard-hit region."

          Gov. Chris Christie established the Hurricane Sandy New Jersey Relief Fund to rebuild the hard-hit Jersey Shore. The Mayor's Fund offers immediate aid needs like food, water and hygiene supplies.

          The Giants held a food drive to assist victims of the storm during Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, and fans donated 38,405 pounds of food and $18,723. The Giants say that is their most successful drive ever.

          Numerous Giants players went out in the community on Tuesday to assist relief efforts. Steve Weatherford, Prince Amukamara, Markus Kuhn, David Douglas, Brandon Mosley, Matt Broha, Terrence Fredrick and Laron Scott were in Seaside Heights distributing food.

          Justin Tuck, Kevin Boothe, Lawrence Tynes, David Baas, Domenik Hixon, Bear Pascoe and Jim Cordle went to the New Jersey Food Bank and made sandwiches for relief workers (here's a picture).

          Eli Manning traveled to Staten Island to assist the American Red Cross. Manning and Osi Umenyiora taped PSAs for the relief effort last week as well. Fans who would like to donate to the American Red Cross can text Red Cross to 9-0-9-9-9 to donate $10. They can also call1-800-RED-CROSS.
