Holmes would have to pass his physical before he could start practicing. The veteran is rehabbing a Lisfranc injury that required two surgeries and limited him to just four games in 2012.

"He's doing a decent job but we'll see how he is for training camp," Ryan said Wednesday. "There's a possibility he starts out on the PUP, I'm not sure, but he seems to be doing well."

Holmes had surgery in October to repair a Lisfranc injury in his left foot, and needed a second surgery in February to remove plates from the foot. Holmes said in December that doctors had told him he probably would not be able to start training until April, and he didn't commit to being ready for training camp.

The veteran, entering the third year of a five-year pact, had a great start in 2012 before suffering the injury against San Francisco on Sept. 30. Holmes caught 20 passes for 272 yards and one touchdown. He took a pay cut for this upcoming season.

There's plenty of time until the season begins, but injuries are already affecting the Jets receivers. In addition to Holmes, second-year receiver Stephen Hill has swelling and fluid in his surgically repaired right knee, and Clyde Gates is dealing with hamstring problems. Jeremy Kerley even sat out of the live portion of Wednesday's organized team activity as he had an issue with his heel.
